University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center’s findings

On October 9 2009, the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center’s findings were released. In recent research they found an increasing number or rare head and neck cancer cases were linked to HPV. This specific cancer is called nasopharyngeal cancer; in these cases the tumor grows in the space behind the nose and at the top of the throat. This cancer has been coined the “hidden cancer” because this is a vary location. Researches noted that they commonly see cancer of the tonsils, but the cancer located behind the nose and at the top of the throat is rare. Finding this possible link to HPV can be helpful in treating this cancer because researches already know a large amount about tonsil cancer and it’s link to HPV.
