In the UK an estimated 7,000 people are diagnosed with head and neck cancer. Of those 7,000 cases approximately 3,500 end in death. In the UK researches previously found a link that connected head and neck cancer with STI; HPV-16. Now, scientists have begun to analyze DNA from these types of cases in order to find genes that signify infection. One of the conclusions that was discovered is that a chemical change in the HPV-16 gene can cause proteins that affect the rate at which cells grow; thus increasing the chance of cancer development. This case also discovered that treatment such as chemotherapy had different results for patients with tonsil cancer that were HPV positive when compared to patients that were HPV negative
